First Annual LETSI Meeting at Learning 2007
|
Participants were energized to guide forward progress on standards in their countries and organizations, armed with new contacts and resources to achieve their goals.
In October 2007 in Orlando, Florida, we convened our first annual LETSI meeting in conjunction with Learning 2007 conference. Many thanks to Elliott Masie and his wonderful staff for their support in planning and executing the LETSI events that formed the groundwork for great things in 2008!
Thirty participants from Australia, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, and the U.S. discussed LETSI and SCORM roadmap topics during the all-day LETSI meeting. The open forum addressed wide-ranging issues, including content aggregation schemes and LETSI's intellectual property strategy, governance, and membership categories and fees. |

The annual Masie Learning event was attended by 2000 training professionals. Learning standards was one of the hottest topics at Learning 2007 this year, with nearly all standards-related sessions filled to capacity. A few even spilled out into the halls! Some of the most popular sessions included:
- Transitioning to SCORM at Chrysler; Bob Hoyer, Bonnie Beresford, and Gordon Mackenzie described how Chrysler used a SCORM 2004-based content management regimen to cut course maintenance costs by 80% while improving the learning experience and enhancing measurement.
- SCORM: 10 Years After and 10 Years Ahead; Tom King provided a retrospective of a decade of progress in learning standards and led an active group discussion of how standards may evolve in the future.
- SCORM: Global Perspectives and Impacts Panel discussed the impact of SCORM on major training initiatives around the world; this panel was comprised of LETSI members: Avron Barr (ADL Initiative), Wayne Hodgins (Autodesk), Carin Martel (Giunti Labs), Rubén Henríquez (el Instituto Latinoamericano de la Comunicación Educativa), Sangwon Lim (Korea Institute for Electronic Commerce), and Peter Green (MedBiquitous).

SCORM TWG Meeting, October 2007
The SCORM Technical Working Group (TWG) is a collaboration of major vendors and adopters of SCORM who have voluntarily contributed time and travel to shape SCORM over the past 10 years. While the focus has historically been on the ADL Initiative and the U.S. military, this year several other communities of practice participated, including SIFA, MedBiquitous, and the AICC. This meeting resulted in the following decisions:
- A two-month online discussion was initiated about an update release of SCORM 2004. In a December TWG teleconference, the group agreed to a Fourth Edition of SCORM 2004 that would include some bug fixes and clarification, and that would align Simple Sequencing with an updated IMS specification.
- A year-long requirements gathering effort was started to understand the requirements for a SCORM 2.0.
- SCORM 2004 will be maintained for the foreseeable future by the ADL, and all work on the ISO Core SCORM standard and on SCORM 2.0 will move to LETSI.
ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36 Meeting, September 2007
The ADL Initiative has been an active participant in SC36 to support SCORM standardization. LETSI has now applied for Category A liaison status with SC36 and plans to participate actively in standardization efforts, as SCORM's new steward. ADL reported from the Toronto, Canada meeting that a stand-alone version of the SCORM 2004 3rd Edition Run-Time Environment book is being fast-tracked as an ISO/IEC technical report by the United Kingdom national body. Furthermore, SC36 approved the formation of a Study Group to investigate the "Core SCORM" proposal submitted by ADL. Core SCORM is a proposed SCORM version that is 100% based on de jure standards and that is consistent with ISO/IEC procedures and document types. Approximately fifteen SC36 participants attended a LETSI dinner in Toronto for an evening of good food and lively conversation.
ADL/AICC SCORM Collaboration Workshop, September 2007
The ADL Initiative and the AICC are discussing the possible convergence of their two models in a future release of SCORM. The first meeting in this process was held at the Boeing Training and Support Systems facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Participants discussed the technical divergence of ADL SCORM and the AICC Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) specification and the anticipated benefits to implementers of having a common approach that leverages the expertise and resources of both organizations and that results in an ISO standard. Discussions will continue at the AICC meeting in San Jose, California, January 28 - February 1, 2008.
