ADL-S1000D Position Paper: Motivating Factors for a S1000D Profile of SCORM
The stewardship of SCORM is transitioning from ADL to LETSI. The future of SCORM is in discussion. A proposed direction is to establish a "core-SCORM", then in time consider offering "SCORM profiles". Core-SCORM would be a generic specification without reference to a particular industry. A SCORM profile could be a version of the specification that reflects the distribution, content and processing needs of a particular market segment. For example, we know the medical education industry has requirements unique from what the Korean educational system requires. Therefore, rather than insert unique industry requirements into a core SCORM, create industry-based SCORM profiles. To reach that endeavour, it would be possible to leverage industry data standards and provide concrete functionality to a profile that could support a business process. Harmonizing and coordinating the activities of learning and other standards-setting organizations is part of the LETSI mission.
This page offers the idea of a S1000D profile of SCORM. There are five attachments:
1) ADL-S1000D position paper on factors motivating a S1000D profile of SCORM
2) A S1000D aggregation schema used for learning content (to be released on August 1, 2008)
3) An instance of the S1000D aggregation schema
4) Two XMLSpy tree views of the S1000D learning-based aggreation schema
Once approved, we will attach a proview of a S1000D version 4 chapter that helps explain the schema. In the meantime, a discussion of the motivating factors for a S1000D profile is offered.
